2024 Green Commute Challenge recap

Throughout the month of October, Green Commute Challenge participants tracked biking, walking, scootering, carpooling, vanpooling or transit trips on the WAY TO GO app. Participants logged 7,066 green commute trips, traveled 52,015 miles, saved $6,000 on gas and cut 7.8 tons of carbon emissions.

2024 Green Commute Challenge winners

Congratulations to this year’s Green Commute Challenge winners! The first and second place teams received a plaque and recognition at the finale party, as well as $300 and $150 respectively. The grand prize individual won a Momentum E+ e-bike from Elite Cycling in their choice of size and color. The runner-up was awarded a $200 gift card.  

  • First place team (based on the highest total green commute trips): HNTB  
  • Second place team: City of Kansas City, Missouri
  • Grand Prize individual (randomly selected among the top 10 participants): Mark G., HNTB
  • Runner Up individual (randomly selected among the top 10 participants): Adam S., HNTB
  • Top Local Government (based on the highest average points per team member): City of Overland Park, Kansas

Thanks to donations from local businesses, 13 prizes were awarded to participants as part of weekly prize drawings.

Challenge highlights

  • Green Commuter On-Ramp Series: WAY TO GO partnered with All Bodies on Bikes Kansas City and Women-Led Cycling to host a two-part workshop to give people the skills to more confidently and safely bike to work.  
  • Local library book displays: Thanks to Johnson County Library and the Kansas City Kansas Public Library for curating and displaying green transportation themed books at local library branches throughout the month of October.  
  • Green Commuter Deals: Four local coffee shops offered discounts for green commuters throughout the month.  
  • Local Government Challenge: New this year, WAY TO GO created a prize category just for local government teams as a way to encourage greater participation from city, county and state government employees around the region. The winner of this category, City of Overland Park, Kansas, won $300 to give to a charity of their choice.  
  • Bike Bus for Grown-Ups: WAY TO GO hosted two morning bike commute rides between Waldo and downtown Kansas City, Missouri on Oct. 11 and 25. Riders could join at one of the designated stops along the way and were able to depart wherever suited them best.  
  • Green Commuter Stop: WAY TO GO set up a pop-up breakfast commuter stop at 41st and Gillham Road in Kansas City, Missouri, on Oct. 25. Hungry commuters got to enjoy Hana’s Donuts and Mildred’s coffee and connect with others before continuing on their way to work.
  • Finale Party: WAY TO GO celebrated the challenge participants and winners with a party at City Barrel Brewery + Kitchen. Attendees enjoyed free food, celebrated the winners and engaged in transportation-themed trivia.
