The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Air Quality Program has issued an Air Quality Alert for Friday, Aug. 1 and Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025. Light northeast wind is bringing Canadian wildfire smoke into Kansas City region today and is likely to continue into tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 2.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) will likely range from moderate to unhealthy at times. You can view the current air quality, AQI and fire activity for your area on AirNow.

"Wildfire smoke has quickly degraded our region's air quality," said Karen Clawson, MARC Air & Mobility Programs Manager. "Please protect your health by limiting time outside. As always, please check the AirNow app for current air quality information."

Steps to protect your health on days when smoke is present include:

  • Healthy people should limit or avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.
  • More vulnerable people should remain indoors.
  • Help keep indoor air clean by closing doors and windows and running air conditioners with air filters.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
  • Contact your doctor if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue.
