The Kansas City Region Housing Data Hub was created to be a community resource that empowers data-driven decision-making and planning across our community. This tool pulls from multiple data sources to provide users with a one-stop shop for their housing data needs.

The American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Data is the most used data source on the hub. The U.S. Census Bureau published a new version of this data on Dec. 12, 2024. The hub was updated to reflect this new version on Dec. 20, 2024. Users will now see five-year estimates for 2019-2023 ACS. You can learn more about the update on the bureau’s website. Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) data, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) custom tabulation of ACS data, is another data source for the hub. On Sept. 12, 2024, HUD released updated CHAS data based on 2017-2021 ACS five-year estimates (updated from 2016 – 2020 data). The hub now also reflects these changes. You can learn more about the update on HUD’s website.

New data reveals that, compared to the previous non-overlapping five-year period (2014-2018), the region saw a 7% increase in cost-burdened households, equating to an additional 6,749 households spending over 30% of their income on housing. Among the MARC counties, Clay County, Missouri, experienced the largest rise, with a 16.5% increase, adding 1,717 cost-burdened households. In contrast, Miami County, Kansas, saw a 9% decline, with 214 fewer cost-burdened households.

All counties also faced a decrease in rental units priced under $900 per month. The MARC region had 121,887 such units during the 2014-2018 period, but this number dropped to 59,887 in the 2019-2023 period, marking a 50.1% decline. Meanwhile, rental units priced over $2,000 saw a significant increase of 238%, rising from 7,471 to 17,784.
