This is a 16-hour course delivered on a shift-friendly schedule over the course of 2 days. The course covers the chemistry of hazardous materials with live demonstrations, hands-on activities and lots of chemical identification exercises using a variety of air monitoring and sample identification equipment including pH paper, oxidizer paper, multi-gas instruments, PIDs, mass spectrometers, flame photometry, and Raman and FTIR spectrometers. Students will get hands-on experience with two dozen different chemicals. Target audience: Hazmat personnel emergency services personnel in the nine-county Kansas City metropolitan area: Leavenworth, Johnson, Miami and Wyandotte counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri. Required Prerequisites:
Hazmat personnel in Mid-America LEPC/HEAP service area in the Greater Kansas City region: Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte in Kansas; and Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray in Missouri.
