Digital Communications Intern

MARC is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Digital Communications Intern. This person will be responsible for supporting the development and posting of content to MARC’s internal and external digital communications platforms.

MARC, the association of local governments and metropolitan planning organization for the bistate Kansas City region, promotes and supports cooperation on regional issues, including transportation, the environment, our workforce and economy, aging services, community development, quality early learning, public safety communications and emergency services. This position is a member of the small but mighty Digital Communications team. We believe in the power of digital communications to amplify our message, engage stakeholders, and drive meaningful change. Our team operates within the larger Public Affairs team, and we all work together to inform and educate the Kansas City region about MARC’s activities, programs and priorities through a variety of channels including our website, email newsletters, media campaigns and social media. We also support internal communication through the maintenance of our staff intranet.

About this position

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in digital communications while contributing to our organization's success. The ideal candidate should have a passion for digital content, excellent communication skills, and a strong interest in staying updated on the latest trends in social media and other digital communication methods.

What you’ll do

  • Content creation — assist in the creation of engaging and compelling content for various digital platforms, including social media, websites, and email campaigns. This could include conducting interviews or research, drafting copy, taking photos or video or creating digital assets.
  • Content posting — collect and review copy and images then post or schedule on a variety of channels including external websites, social media channels and staff intranet.
  • Social media — contribute to the planning, creation, scheduling and monitoring of social media content. Identify opportunities to align with trends to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Analytics and reporting — track and analyze key performance metrics across digital channels. Provide insights and recommendations for improvement based on data-driven analysis.
  • Email communications — Support the development and execution of email newsletters. Ensure content is targeted, relevant and aligned with organizational goals. Assist with maintenance of email lists.
  • Graphic design — basic graphic design skills to create visually appealing assets for digital platforms, ensuring brand consistency.
  • Digital strategy — work closely with the digital communications team to develop and implement effective digital communication strategies. Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Collaboration — collaborate with other teams within MARC to align digital communication efforts with overall organizational objectives. 

About you

Skills you’ll need:

  • A passion for digital communications and a desire to learn and grow in the field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital marketing trends.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and draw actionable insights.
  • Basic graphic design skills (experience with Adobe Creative Cloud is a plus).

Basic requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (communications, marketing, digital media or related field).

Additional qualifications

Your resume will stand out if you have:

  • Familiarity with content management systems (experience with Drupal, WordPress, Hootsuite or SharePoint are a plus).
  • Knowledge of AP Style. 

Compensation and duration

This position starts in August and runs concurrent with the school year with the possibility to extend into the summer. The starting rate is $16 per hour with a maximum of 20 hours per week. MARC offers an attractive team-oriented work environment with work from home flexibility. The chosen candidate must be available at least one day per week in the office in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
