Shelter Fundamentals is a basic level course that introduces the roles and responsibilities for opening, operating and closing a shelter during a disaster. The course focuses on what new shelter workers need to know to work in a shelter. The purpose of the course is to prepare participants for the roles and responsibilities they will perform at a shelter services.

This training is presented on behalf of the Metropolitan Emergency Manager's Committee (MEMC) and the Greater Kansas City American Red Cross (ARC).

Course objectives

Explain principles of sheltering, identify client needs, describe different types of shelters, identify shelter operations and Explain types of service works and how to work in a shelter.

Target audience

Employees, community volunteers, COAD and CERT volunteers who would like to assist with activities and tasks in working at a shelter.

Please note: if you are registering to attend the Shelter Simulation course scheduled for June 26, you must complete the Shelter Fundamentals course. 

Participants must attend the entire classroom session to receive a certificate.
