As regional communities consider ordinances allowing accessory dwelling units (ADUs), last fall MARC asked local jurisdictions to provide current ADU ordinances to share with other communities interested in adopting such an ordinance.

ADU ordinances:

  • Provide flexibility in housing choices that accommodate changes in lifestyle.
  • Allow homeowners to share independent living areas with family members and others.
  • Give older adults the opportunity to age in place as they require more care.
  • Help extended families to be near one another while maintaining privacy.

Several Kansas City regional communities have passed – or are considering – zoning changes that make the permitting and use of accessory structures easier and more affordable. Examples of Kansas City regional ADU ordinances can be found here.

Please help us keep this list current. If your city or county has an ADU ordinance that's not listed or if your city or county adopts an ADU in the future, please send an email.
