In February 2023, a CHW was asked to speak with three Swahili-speaking clients that came to the agency, a man and two women. They had been advised by the Kansas Department for Children and Families to seek help to apply for Medicaid. The CHW spoke with one of the women and found out that she had been in the country for less than a year and was registered with Catholic Charities who helps refugees for the first five years in Kansas, and that they had already helped her apply for Medicaid. The CHW called Catholic Charities to make sure there would be no duplication of services.

The client was also concerned about her 20-year-old son, who is blind and disabled. She said the son was out of his prescription medicine hadn’t taken if for two weeks. The CHW contacted Align family Health and scheduled a doctor’s appointment for the son for following day, without health insurance.

The client left the office happy and called the CHW the following day to let her know everything went well at her son’s doctor’s appointment, and that she was in touch with a caseworker at Catholic Charities who will help her son get a wheelchair for her son and enroll him in a special needs school.
