What are they?
Major Investment Studies (MIS) examine which alternative transportation strategy — or mix of strategies — will best work to solve a transportation problem within a corridor. These studies determine costs and benefits associated with proposed alternatives and involve public participation in the decision-making process. MIS consider a broad range of land-use, environmental, social and transportation impacts. They consider all viable modes of transportation but may vary widely in scope and treatment depending on the scale of the problem being studied and range of potential solutions.

Major Investment Studies are reviewed by the Total Transportation Policy Committee (TTPC) and the MARC Board of Directors as they are completed and may result in changes to the Long-Range Transportation Plan. They may also impact estimated financial capacity and/or air quality conformity. Corridor studies are similar in nature to MIS, but they do not always analyze the broadest range of possible alternatives as MIS are required to study.

Why conduct them?
Major Investment Studies are conducted within MARC's metropolitan planning organization (MPO) boundary to develop and select transportation improvement strategies for regional travel corridors. These studies are conducted per MARC policies as a part of the metropolitan planning process for greater Kansas City.

Currently, there are no Major Investment Studies open and under study.
