National Trails Day

Image of a jogger's legs, a hiker's legs and a cyclist's legs, with a photo of a native planting in the background. Type reads: "MetroGreen Outdoors".Communities around the Greater Kansas City region are celebrating National Trails Day and National Prairie Day on Saturday, June 3, 2017, bringing together outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds to celebrate the natural heritage of the U.S. trail system, and the value of our native grassland ecosystems. MetroGreen Outdoors honors both trails and prairies by bringing information about area celebrations together in one listing.

Traditionally held each year on the first Saturday in June, National Trails Day was established to recognize the value of recreational trails and the people involved in building and maintaining them. Local cities and municipalities mark National Trails Day by holding public events such as walking and biking activities, trail openings, family entertainment and educational seminars.

Also held on the first Saturday in June, National Prairie Day was founded by the Missouri Prairie Foundation in 2016. For 50 years, the foundation has worked to restore, protect and raise public awareness about the value of prairie ecosystems. Learn more at
