Business Patterns by County
Annual data of the total number of employers and employees, annual payroll for all establishments in each county of the Kansas City CSA (beginning in 2004), and number of establishments by employee size. County Business Patterns excludes business owners who were self-employed, employees of private households, railroad employees, agriculture production workers and most government employees. Information on businesses without paid employees is released as part of the Nonemployer Statistics report (see below). Data are available since 1988 through 2014. Data for 1997 and earlier is tabulated by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. Data for 1998 and later is tabulated by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. A link is provided for accessing the bridge between the 2 classification systems. Latest data (2014) was released by the Census Bureau April 21, 2016.
Business Patterns by ZIP Code
Annual data of the total number of employers and employees by employer size, plus first quarter and annual payroll for all establishments in each ZIP code for the Kansas City Combined Statistical Area. The series is published annually (available data here are from 1994 through 2014) and covers most economic activity, but excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees. Latest data (2014) was released by Census Bureau May 2016.

The map provides an interactive, easy-to-understand overview of how many types of businesses are in your community or anywhere else in the U.S. The map includes 2012 County Business Patterns statistics combined with demographic statistics from the 2010 Decennial Census.

Bureau of Economic Analysis, Regional Economic Information System, annual totals of full-time and part-time employment estimates by industry and by county in the Kansas City-Overland Park-Kansas CSA plus totals of the states of Kansas and Missouri, from 1969 to 2015.
Employment by NAICS Super-sector and Sub-sector codes
Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly non-farm employment estimates for Kansas and Missouri (since 1939), the Kansas City MSA, the Kansas City, Mo. and the Kansas City, Ks. sides of the MSA from 1970 through December 2016 using the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). This dataset also includes 1990 to current estimates for Lawrence, Ks. and the St. Joseph MSA. Prior data were reported using the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual through the end of 2002, and can be seen in the data set Historical Employment by SIC Major Division, 1-digit and 2-digit Codes.

Minority, Veteran and Women-Owned Firms in the Kansas City MSA
Number of firms, employment and sales receipts for the Kansas City MSA, counties and cities with 100 or more minority, veteran, or women-owned businesses from 1969 through the 2007 Surveys of Business Owners (SBO). The SBO covers firms with and without paid employees. Firms with no paid employees are omitted from many Economic Census reports, therefore, caution should be exercised in comparing these data with data from other reports of the Economic Census. The Survey is done every five years and data is released about three to four years later.
Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses in the Peer Metros
Number of minority- or women-owned firms, employment and sales receipts for the Kansas City MSA and the Peer Metros from the 1997 and 2002 Surveys of Business Owners (SBO).. The SBO covers firms with and without paid employees. Firms with no paid employees are omitted from many other 2002 Economic Census reports, therefore, caution should be exercised in comparing these data with data from other reports of the Economic Census.
