Transportation

Giving up your car keys may feel like you are being asked to give up your independence, but there are programs and services available to help you remain in control of how you get around town.

Click here is a list of area transportation service providers.

In addition to professional services, many older adults rely on the help of children, caretakers, friends or neighbors for transportation.

When considering your transportation options, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Details: Ask who will drive you. Is it a trained, paid or volunteer driver? Is the organization familiar with this driver? Is the driver willing and/or able to assist you with packages, groceries, or getting up and down stairs? A helpful hint is to ask the transportation provider if they offer door-to-door, arm-through-arm service.

  • Price and payment: Some services charge for each one-way trip. Determine whether you are charged for a one-way trip, round trip or the distance traveled. Ask whether you will pay the driver directly or if you can set up a payment plan with the organization. Do they accept cash, checks or credit cards? Can you share a ride with a friend or neighbor to reduce the cost?

  • Scheduling: Make sure you know how far in advance you need to schedule your transportation. Some providers require no notice, some 24 hours and others require a week. Do you need to schedule a return ride as well? Can you schedule an evening or weekend ride?

  • Routes: Does the transportation provider have a fixed route with a specified pick-up location, or will they pick you up from anywhere?

  • Restrictions: Does the service only provide transportation for medical appointments, or can you go wherever you would like — even on social outings?

What does the MARC Department of Aging Services offer?

The MARC Department of Aging Services currently offers the following:

  • Reserved Transportation. Reserved transportation may be available to all seniors aged 60 years and over. Limited reserved transportation may be available to those 18-59 years of age with a disability. Generally, MARC’s reserved transportation is provided through contracted agencies with paid drivers. The door-to-door service must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance and is primarily to provide trips for medical appointments. Please be aware that the demand for this service far outpaces the number of trips available each day and we cannot guarantee a ride will be available every time you need one.

Please call our Information and Assistance line at 816/421-4980 to determine which agency MARC contracts with in your area.

  • Wheelchair Transportation. Wheelchair transportation may be available to all seniors aged 60 years and over, who are using a wheelchair due to mobility limitations. Limited wheelchair transportation may be available to those 18-59 years of age, with a disability requiring the use of a wheelchair. The wheelchair transportation is provided through contracted agencies with paid drivers, using lift- or ramp-equipped vans. The door-to-door service must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance and will primarily be available to provide trips for medical appointments. As with the reserved transportation, the demand for this service far outpaces the number of trips available each day and we cannot guarantee that a ride will be available every time you need one.

Please call our Information and Assistance line at 816/421-4980 to determine which agency MARC contracts with in your area.
